This is an exciting opportunity to develop a career in auditor independence at Deloitte Australia, and we are looking for an experienced Senior Manager to join our Independence team. An Audit firm’s independence is a high-profile area that draws attention from regulators, the media and the public, and plays a vital role in protecting Deloitte’s reputation. 

 

 

What will your typical day look like?  

The successful candidate will join a diverse, interactive, fast paced team, providing critical support to the Deloitte business to ensure the firm, partners and staff comply with auditor independence requirements. 

The Independence team is there to:

  • Work with client facing teams to provide advice on a range of independence matters to help the business identify, analyse, and appropriately mitigate any risks identified 
  • Provide an effective independence quality control framework to assist partners and staff with the application of independence policy,
  • Mitigate risk of non-compliance with policy through:
    • The maintenance of operational and compliance systems, 
    • The provision of training and education to our people around independence matters

 

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Lead a team of junior team members to assist our partners and client facing professionals with independence matters
  • Manage the independence aspects around audit engagement acceptance processes and monitoring program.
  • Provide technical advice on a broad range of independence matters including consultation with our business risk teams and global independence team where required
  • Build effective relationships with partners and staff, including consulting with other parts of the Firm to share ideas and knowledge on specific business issues and needs, to provide added value and timely responses to the business
  • Managing the resolution, documentation and communication of potential independence breaches
  • Develop strong technical knowledge as a subject matter expert on the independence regulatory and professional requirements
  • Overseeing and monitoring our systems, processes and procedures ensuring that we are meeting our requirements and delivering quality service
  • Manage daily workflow and service delivery to the business to ensure timely consultation of matters raised by the business
  • Lead projects to enhance processes, systems, tools and documentation
  • Identifying trends and hot topics requiring further guidance and training for the business
  • Assist the senior leaders with the management of the team, including training managers and junior members and providing coaching to develop their skills.

 

About the team

The Independence team forms part of the Quality and Risk group. Quality & Risk enables our business and supports and elevates trust in the Deloitte brand. The Independence team is responsible for ensuring Deloitte Australia maintains compliance with audit firm independence rules and regulations of external regulatory bodies e.g., The Accounting Professional & Ethical Standards Board (APESB) and the US Securities and Exchange Commission and the Australian Corporations Act 2001.

You may have all or some of the following experiences and skills:

  • Individuals with professional qualifications and a strong working knowledge of the concept of auditor Independence
  • Individuals with other significant risk management, regulatory, or compliance experience
  • Experience in a leadership role managing people as a career coach and leading a team
  • The ability to interpret and understand policy and apply it to real-life scenarios
  • Experience in working with, and designing and documenting, frameworks and processes 
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills – the successful candidate will be working with partners and employees across the firm 
  • Demonstrate an ability to troubleshoot and manage projects and processes, applying expertise to make appropriate decisions that impact the firm.
  • Strong communicator with colleagues at all levels including senior leaders within the firm
  • Ability to build strong working relationships
  • Strong analytical and interpretation skills with excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to think strategically and handle complex concepts      
  • Proactive and capable of working using own initiative
  • Proven leadership and team management skills
  • Adaptable and flexible with good team working skills and the ability to multi-task
  • Strong project management skills and proficiency at driving projects to a close
  • Ability to work to pre-determined deadlines and meet objectives
