This is your opportunity to shape how Deloitte and our clients harness data, automation, and AI to transform tax. As a Data & Backend Engineer, you’ll help design and deliver digital solutions that not only streamline compliance but also unlock insights and redefine what’s possible in the tax function.

About the team

At Deloitte, we believe the future of tax will be powered by data, automation, and AI. Our Tax & Legal Transformation and Technology team is on a mission to transform how organisations manage compliance and unlock insights, building smarter, faster, and more reliable solutions that are reshaping the way tax gets done. You’ll join a collaborative group of software engineers, data experts, tax specialists, product thinkers, and AI technologists who love solving complex problems and turning ideas into real outcomes. Together, we’re building the next generation of tax technology and we’re looking for curious, creative people to help bring it to life.

What will your typical day look like?

We manage a large enterprise tax platform with complex database architectures and highly interconnected processing layers. As the platform continues to scale, we are making significant investments in platform modernisation, data model simplification and automation.

We are looking for a Data & Backend Engineer who thrives on solving difficult engineering problems across SQL, backend systems and enterprise-scale data processing environments. You will help support and optimise business-critical systems while contributing to the future evolution of the platform toward more automated and AI-enabled processing capabilities, such as:

  • Designing, building and enhancing our tax analytics and processing platform, including automation, APIs and backend data workflows.
  • Troubleshooting and resolving complex production and support issues across SQL, backend services, calculation logic, stored procedures, integrations and data processing layers during peak delivery periods.
  • Optimising inefficient .NET-to-SQL interfaces by refactoring "chatty" database calls into scalable and high-performing processing patterns.
  • Diving into complex stored procedures (SPs) and massive relational data models to identify and resolve performance bottlenecks.
  • Collaborating with software, data, and AI teams to drive ongoing platform enhancements including the evolution of our rules engine and backend processing architecture.
  • Supporting the modernisation and simplification of legacy platform components, including improvements to data models and processing approaches.
  • Identifying opportunities to leverage emerging data engineering and AI capabilities to improve platform scalability, automation and operational efficiency.

Enough about us, let’s talk about you.

  • 3+ years of experience as a hybrid Data/Backend Engineer.
  • Strong SQL and SQL Server capability, including complex query development, stored procedures, troubleshooting and performance optimisation
  • Experience working with relational data models, data warehousing concepts and enterprise-scale data processing.
  • Experience with .NET/Entity Framework, or comparable backend frameworks, for developing secure and efficient RESTful APIs
  • Strong technical ability to understand, debug and enhance complex application and data processing logic.
  • Experience supporting or troubleshooting enterprise applications in production environments
  • Familiarity with modern single page application practices as well as development practices including code control, CICD, TDD/BDD and basic cloud hosting knowledge
  • Effective communication skills and experience collaborating with other developers.
  • Self-starter mindset: comfortable working autonomously in a fast-paced, flexible, and dynamic environment
  • Exposure to the following would be advantageous:
  • Domain knowledge in tax and financial compliance, with the ability to map business logic to robust technical designs
  • Using AI-powered developer tools (e.g. GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, MCP) and agentic
  • Cloud and platform engineering technologies including Azure, Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Databricks, Azure Fabric, or other cloud data engineering platforms.
