About the team

M&A is one of the major aspects of the corporate finance world. Each facet of M&A has its own unique challenge, and it often takes a diverse team to get the best results on a deal. Deloitte’s M&A business is one of the largest in Australia, advising top tier clients on complex merger, acquisition, divestment and capital market activities. Our team works across a range of sectors including consumer business, financial services, infrastructure, technology, healthcare and real estate.

Within M&A at Deloitte there are several interesting areas of work:

  1. Corporate Finance – support clients by advising them on M&A transactions, including buying and selling businesses and assets. From start-ups and emerging businesses to globally recognised brands, we work with a variety of clients including privately owned founder or family-led businesses, public companies, and private equity houses (and their investee companies).  We advise clients across the whole M&A lifecycle – that means from the moment they begin to consider a transaction, to the day that the deal completes and ownership changes. We support our clients every step of the way, from articulating an investment thesis, analysing financials to understand business performance, and finding a buyer to sell to or a business to acquire, through to assisting with negotiation on the deal, project managing the needs of due diligence and other advisors, and working out who gets what proceeds at completion.  Throughout a transaction, our focus is on maximising value for our clients and finding the best fit for their future. We support businesses and owners in making important decisions and realising value for them and their stakeholders. It can be a highly emotive time for them and our support helps guide them through the challenges they face during a deal process.
Degrees: Finance, Business/Commerce, Accounting or Economics majoring in Finance

  1. Transaction Services – work closely with clients through the entire M&A lifecycle to deliver financial due diligence which includes analysis of accounting information, analytics on key financial/operating performance metrics, advice on transaction related accounting matters and review of sale and purchase agreements.
Degrees: Accounting, Business/ Commerce, Economics or Finance majoring in Accounting

  1. Valuations – help clients make informed business and investment decisions by quantifying and articulating value for transaction, financial reporting, taxation, financing, litigation and strategic management purposes.
Degrees: Finance, Business/Commerce, Accounting or Economics majoring in Finance

  1. Consulting Services – help Corporate and Private Equity clients maximise the benefits and maintain business and operational continuity when making acquisitions or divestments. Specifically, we support our clients throughout the M&A lifecycle by helping define their M&A strategy, performing commercial due diligence of the market in which a target operates, assessing potential merger synergies or standalone operations of businesses, and providing acquisition integration or divestment separation support. A day in the life of an M&A Consulting Services graduate will be diverse and varied!
Degrees: Finance, Business/Commerce, Accounting, Economics, Arts, or Engineering, majoring in Finance

What will your typical day look like?

Step into a dynamic environment where you’ll learn from experts, tackle real challenges, and grow your skills in a supportive team. Depending on the team and project, you could:

  • Build your analytical and advisory skills as you support clients by providing advice based on financial analysis of key valuation drivers of a transaction.

  • Build knowledge of accounting and financial concepts, as well as commercial and business acumen

  • Be given the opportunity to work on large and complex business valuations where you will gather an in-depth understanding of the market, including the legal or regulatory environment, and analyse financial and qualitative information to provide insightful technical and commercial valuation advice.

  • Partner with functional leads to develop and project manage integration or separation plans, blueprinting a target operating model, hosting a client workshop, modelling potential synergies or the standalone cost base of a business, or analysing potential new markets for our clients to expand into.

You won’t be expected to know everything from day one. You’ll be supported through structured learning, feedback, and collaboration.

Enough about us, let’s talk about you.

We’re seeking final year students or recent graduates (within 2 years) to join our graduate program.  As a naturally curious, bright, ambitious and hard-working student, you’ll also:
